UNIMED Election
UNIMED refers to the medical society under UNIMAS, formed by medical students, for medical students. To join the election, you must have be nominated, and have a seconder. But no campaigning going on lar.
First time experiencing this kind of election. Battle between races. It sure was an exciting one.
The voting wasn't sth like what we had during election day, when there's cubicles for u to cast ur vote. It's merely a show of hands. This is the tricky part. Who vote for who, one glance across the auditorium, you'd know it. Very dangerous.
Of course, few of the chinesedid step out for a post in the committee board. Wasn't that easy actually. I can say that it involved strategy & tactics. Having the potential and leadership aren't suffice to win a "seat" in the board. You need votes. And the reality is, chinese will only vote for chinese, malays for malays, and such. I'm not saying it happens all the time, but it did happen MOST of the time. Sometimes no matter how united you are (among ur own race), you'll still be outnumbered. This is sth very appalling.
It was definitely very tense when the election was going on, especially while waiting for the result. Right after that you can hear people cheering, and people sighing. It really was a moment of glory when u realise your friends manage to win the election. You feel proud. It's really like a war. You fight with dignity and honor. Hahahaha.
I competed for the post of PRO (Public Relation Officer) and Director. I lost to my Malay coursemate by only 4 votes for the election of PRO, but i won the Director post. I had a mixed feeling after that, wonder if i should be glad, or i shouldn't be. Comparing these 2 post, maybe what i really wanted was Director, but just by 4 votes, i could have gotten the PRO post. ARgh, you know those feelings.
I salute and respect those malays who actually voted for the Chinese. I really respect them. I'm certain that some consequences would follow, and i feel sorry. Again, SALUTE . We really appreciate those votes. Thanks for standing up and believing in us.
Also, this election is an eye-opener. Coursemates whom i thought were "benign" were damn "malignant". Could never guess they were so sly behind that mask. Everyone has the right to choose and vote. One can never be forced to vote for someone else.
So as for the final outcome, chinese won 6 posts(approx. 40 %) of the board, compared to last year 5. The happy part was my other 4 close friends are in the board too, 1 vice president, 3 directors.
And thanks for those who voted for me. =) And the smile u gave while i was up in front before my election. I guess you'd never know it meant so much to me.
What awaits us, i donno. But this is sth new. Sth fresh.
